A Special Field Visit for First-Year Petroleum and Gas Engineering Students to the Yemeni Geological Museum to Enhance Practical and Theoretical Skills
University Media
As part of scientific activities aimed at bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application, and in line with the Emirates International University's commitment to promoting field learning, the Petroleum and Gas Engineering Department at the College of Engineering organized a scientific field visit for first-year students to the Yemeni Geological Museum at the Geological Survey and Mineral Resources Authority. This visit was generously sponsored by the University President, Dr. Khaled Ahmed Salah, and directly supervised by the Dean of the College and Head of the Petroleum and Gas Engineering Department, Dr. Ibrahim Fara'a, accompanied by Engineer Waleed Qasim.
During the visit, Engineer Fahd Al-Buraq, Director of the Geological Museum, delivered a comprehensive scientific presentation covering the geological history of Yemen from the Paleozoic Era through various geological periods to the present day, highlighting the geological characteristics that distinguish Yemen and their scientific and economic importance.
During the detailed explanation, students learned about the Yemeni geological column, sedimentary basins and their different ages, as well as the various types of minerals, igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, and methods for distinguishing between them. The explanation also covered the differences between subsurface and volcanic rocks, the depositional environments of sedimentary rocks, and their geographical distribution on the Yemeni geological map.
The visit also included introducing students to the main source rocks, oil reservoir rocks, their types and characteristics, and showcasing models of well drilling equipment, drill bits, and drilling fluids. They also learned about different types of petroleum derivatives, contributing to an early practical understanding of the nature of petroleum and gas engineering.
The students expressed their enthusiasm and satisfaction with the rich information and direct learning experiences provided during the visit, emphasizing that such visits enhance their passion for the field and broaden their horizons for understanding their future careers.
