As part of its community and academic partnerships, and its commitment to enhancing the practical and theoretical knowledge of its students, Ibni Autism Center, in partnership with Emirates International University, launched a specialized introductory training course on autism spectrum disorder and early diagnosis on Monday. The course targeted female students from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences – Department of Human Medicine, with the participation of eight students. This training is part of the preparations for a medical camp for the early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, which is planned to be held at the center.
The course covered comprehensive scientific topics, beginning with an introduction to autism spectrum disorder in terms of its general concept, basic characteristics, and behavioral and developmental symptoms. It also reviewed the most prominent causes and contributing factors associated with the disorder, contributing to building a solid scientific understanding among the participants.
The course also included a detailed scientific comparison between autism spectrum disorder and several similar disorders, highlighting their similarities and differences, differential diagnosis mechanisms, and methods for scientifically and systematically distinguishing between them.
In the diagnostic section, the importance of early intervention and the development of appropriate treatment and educational plans was emphasized. Several diagnostic scales used to identify autism spectrum disorder were introduced, most notably the M-CHAT scale and the Gilliam scale. The concept behind each scale, its objectives, and its applications in the diagnostic process were explained.
The course also included a practical training component, during which students were trained on how to administer the scales, score them, and interpret and analyze the results. This training enhanced their practical skills and connected theoretical knowledge with real-world, field-based applications.
The course was met with positive feedback and praise from the participating students, and contributed to raising their awareness and scientific and practical knowledge in the field of autism spectrum disorder and early diagnosis. This reflects the importance of such training programs in preparing qualified medical professionals capable of contributing to community service and improving public health.
