In a remarkable scientific and technological achievement, students from the Department of Information Technology at the Emirates International University discussed a unique graduation project on Thursday. This application specializes in examining pests and diseases that threaten agricultural plants and proposing optimal solutions and treatments to combat them.

The application was presented as a graduation project by students Saddam Hisham Al-Gharbani, Ahmed Al-Basara, Ali Al-Gharbani, Ayman Al-Fasih, and Mohammed Rabid. It was supervised by Dr. Hisham Aqlan and Assistant Supervisor Engineer Ahlam Al-Hamdani.

The discussion was attended by the Secretary-General of the University, Dr. Fouad Ismail Hanash; Head of the Information Technology Department, Dr. Farouk Al-Fahidi; Head of the Cybersecurity Department, Dr. Jameel Rashid; Project Supervisor, Dr. Hisham Aqlan; Assistant Supervisor, Engineer Ahlam Al-Hamdani; and a number of college staff.

The application was developed using advanced programming languages to achieve its ambitious goals. It is equipped with 16 artificial intelligence algorithms, extensively trained using a database of nearly 4,000 images. These algorithms enable the application, in its first phase, to accurately identify various pests and diseases affecting tomato, potato, and pepper crops.

The students explained that their project aims to effectively contribute to reducing the heavy losses incurred by farmers due to the spread of epidemics and agricultural diseases, thereby securing national production of these essential crops and reducing reliance on harmful chemical fertilizers and toxins.

This smart application will generate significant savings for farmers and support efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in targeted agricultural crops, leading to export opportunities and contributing to strengthening the national economy.

The application also helps predict pests and diseases by relying on artificial intelligence techniques to analyze data and images with the aim of early prediction of the emergence of plant pests and diseases, enabling farmers to take timely preventative measures.

The student team is developing the application to help monitor and analyze soil and climate data, and provide farmers with agricultural guidance and specialized agricultural advice based on crop type and regional conditions. This will contribute to improving agricultural practices, increasing productivity, and adding more plant species to its database.

The discussion committee members praised the project's innovative concept and the application's meticulous implementation, noting its tremendous potential to serve the agricultural sector and advance it toward more sustainable and effective practices.

For his part, the University's Secretary-General, Dr. Fouad Ismail Hanash, expressed the university's pride in its students and their ability to provide innovative technological solutions to the challenges facing vital sectors in the country. He emphasized the university's full support for such pioneering student projects that harness technology to serve society and contribute to comprehensive development. He considered this project a model for transforming creative ideas into practical solutions to the challenges facing one of Yemen's most important sectors, and heralds a more prosperous and sustainable future for the agricultural sector.
