The Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the University, in cooperation with the Activities Department, organized a scientific visit for the second-level students of the department to the historic city of Shibam Kawkaban today, Monday, as part of the building construction course, and within the framework of the UAE University's keenness to link the theoretical aspect with the practical aspect and provide students with skills and knowledge through practical applications, accompanied by Dr. Muhammad Al-Madhaji and Engineer Zainab Al-Akhaly.
During the visit, the students learned about the architectural preservation strategy by rebuilding (Bab Al-Hadid and Qal'at Al-Qishla - Kawkaban) that were subjected to demolition and sabotage due to bombing, and the options for architectural preservation by restoration and reuse (abandoned historic buildings in Kawkaban), and warning of architectural intervention errors using modern materials and techniques, cement supplies, and rebuilding collapsed walls through guesswork or making changes that do not match the distinctive character and style of construction of the historic landmark (the old mosque - Kawkaban).
The students also learned about methods of consciously dealing with architectural heritage by adding new spaces to a historical landmark in harmony with the spirit of the original building, and the necessary structural intervention using the method of "reinforcement and consolidation" through modern construction materials "ceiling supports and supports made of solid bricks and iron"; and it is resorted to in extreme cases of necessity (as in the southern portico - the Great Mosque of Shibam), as well as explaining the basics of architectural diagnosis of historical buildings and the problems they suffer from and threaten their safety (the external walls of the Great Mosque - Shibam).
In addition, the students learned during the visit about the most prominent landmarks located around the Great Mosque of Shibam, including the brokerage and the entrance to Old Shibam, and the most prominent features of visual distortion of historical cities by introducing modern elements into cities, especially around historical buildings.
