The Chemical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the Emirates University organized a scientific field visit for the second and third level students of the department to the Amran Cement Factory yesterday, Monday, as part of the field training for the students.

The students listened to specialists in various departments and production units to explain the departments in the factory, as well as a brief about the production capacity and the stages that the factory went through.

The students were received by Dr. Ahmed Al-Anwa, Head of the Research and Studies Center at the Amran Cement Factory, accompanied by Engineer Muhammad Osama Al-Maqtari, the department’s teaching assistant and student representative - Emirates International University, who took them on a tour of all the centers, units and laboratories of the factory. The beginning was from the chemistry, physics and radiology laboratories.. where the chemical, physical and radiological properties were studied. Then the students were taken on a tour to the Logical Control Department, where the mechanism was explained from the beginning of production to packaging through the Control Panel.

Then the students were taken on a qualitative tour to the detectors where a group of engineers accompanied the students to the detector that contains sedimentary layers of the basic materials that are part of the composition and manufacture of cement. This was a qualitative visit through which they learned how to extract the materials. The students were explained the method (blasting using explosives as well as using boclins) and they learned about the four types of oxides that are part of the cement industry, which are oxides (calcium, iron, aluminum, silicon). The students also listened to a detailed explanation of the work mechanism in the production department, which consists of two production lines (old + new) with a production cost of one and a half million tons of cement annually. During the tour, the students learned about the mechanism used to search for limestone raw materials, as the factory is close to the quarry, which is very rich in limestone and marl (calcium carbonate), in addition to the three basic elements that go into cement production, which are (silicon, iron, aluminum), as the Amran factory quarry represents 95% of the raw materials in the factory that help produce cement, especially ordinary Portland cement, which is required in the Yemeni construction market.

The visit concluded with the students visiting the mill, which operates with an electrical capacity of 20 to 25 thousand watts, which grinds and crushes limestone rocks coming from the quarry, in addition to clay rocks coming from other areas, and then the thermal oven for the process of mixing limestone and clay rocks in scientific proportions subject to international quality standards for the production of cement of all kinds, ending with the process of packaging the cement in bags with 50 kilogram packages.
