Discussion of a Pioneering Graduation Project by Laboratory Medicine Students on the Prevalence of Thrombocytopenia in Pregnant Yemeni Women

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote applied scientific research and link it to community health issues, the Emirates International University hosted a discussion yesterday, Monday, of a pioneering graduation project presented by a group of students from the Medical Laboratory Sciences Department, entitled: "The Prevalence of Thrombocytopenia in Pregnant Women in Yemen."

The project was submitted by the students: Yazid Abdulmalik Ali Abdul Aziz Al-Maghbash, Abdullah Saleh Muhammad Al-Aitari, Abdulrahman Muhammad Ahmed Faqihi, Yasser Haider Ali Saleh Al-Qutari, Hassan Samir Muhammad Ali Mahdi, Ziad Ahmed Ibrahim Bakhit, Elias Omar Muhammad Ahmed Ashur, and Hatem Hamoud Awad Fadel. It was supervised by Professor Dr. Hafez Al-Noud, the principal supervisor.

The discussion committee consisted of: Professor Dr. Hafez Al-Noud, the principal supervisor; Professor Dr. Saleh Al-Dhaheri, the external examiner; and Professor Dr. Walid Al-Dabai, the internal examiner.

 The project included a large-scale field study that included 500 pregnant women from various backgrounds. The aim was to determine the prevalence of thrombocytopenia among Yemeni pregnant women and to study its association with pregnancy stages and the factors influencing it.

The results of the study showed that the prevalence of thrombocytopenia among pregnant women was 5.6%, with most cases being mild, while more severe cases occurred during the third trimester of pregnancy. It was also noted that the number of pregnancies may be associated with a slight increase in the risk of infection, while variables such as age or the use of nutritional supplements did not appear to have a significant effect.

The discussion committee emphasized that the project is distinguished by its precise scientific methodology, advanced statistical analysis, and the importance of its results in improving the quality of healthcare for pregnant women in Yemen, especially given the lack of local studies on this topic.

Through these projects, the university affirms that its vision is not limited to theoretical education, but extends to preparing graduates capable of scientific production and contributing effectively to providing realistic solutions to community health and environmental problems.

 This achievement is part of a series of distinguished projects across the university's various disciplines, strengthening its academic presence as a true gateway to science and development in Yemen.
