A graduation project for students from the Department of Laboratory Medicine reveals rates of diabetes and prediabetes among faculty members.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote applied scientific research related to Yemeni societal issues, the Emirates International University in Sana'a hosted a discussion yesterday, Monday, of a unique graduation project for students from the Department of Medical Laboratory Medicine. The project was titled "Prevalence and Risk Factors of Prediabetes and Diabetes Among Yemeni Faculty Members at the Emirates International University."

The project is the result of a joint research effort presented by students: Salah Khaled Saeed Hamid Al-Aghbari, Ismail Mohammed Yahya Ali Al-Radmi, Asim Mutahhar Yahya Ahmed Al-Shaer, Abdul Aziz Abdullah Yahya Zayed, Wael Abdul Ghani Ahmed Abdullah, Khaled Ahmed Mohammed Abbas Al-Samawi, Ismail Faker Ali Ahmed Al-Qabati, Ahmed Abdullah Abdullah Mohammed Qurei, and Alaa Abdul Raqib Abdullah Abdo. It was supervised by Professor Walid Al-Dabai, the principal supervisor.

 The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Walid Al-Dubai, the principal supervisor; Prof. Abdul-Basit Al-Ghouri, the external examiner; and Dr. Taha Al-Nasari, the internal examiner.

The study, which included 70 university faculty members, revealed alarming rates of prediabetes, with 14.28% of participants developing prediabetes and 2.85% developing full-blown diabetes.

The team concluded that a high body mass index (BMI) and advanced age are closely associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes. The data showed that blood glucose levels increased by 1.58 mg/dL for each year of age. Significant statistical differences were also found, confirming this relationship, reflecting the study's accuracy and scientific rigor.

The study recommends the adoption of periodic early screening and health awareness programs on campus, which would help protect academic staff from the risks of chronic diseases and enhance the quality of their professional and personal lives.

 This qualitative study reflects the commitment of the Emirates International University to providing educational and research outcomes relevant to the needs of the local community, particularly in the health field, and to enhancing the university community's awareness of the risks of chronic diseases.

These scientific achievements also underscore the excellence of the Medical Laboratory Medicine Program at the Emirates University, in terms of the quality of education and training, research support, and high-level academic supervision, making it an incubator for scientific excellence and creativity.
