From University Halls to Smart Fields: Emirates International University Students Develop a Revolutionary AI-Powered Crop Protection System

In an academic display reflecting the high quality of education and the advanced approach to innovation and practical application, Emirates International University witnessed the discussion of a distinguished graduation project by students from the Artificial Intelligence Department. The project, titled “A Smart Agricultural System for Early Pest Detection and Environmental Monitoring Using Artificial Intelligence and Sensing Technologies,” represents an advanced scientific experiment that embodies the ability of university students to transform technical knowledge into practical solutions that serve society and sustainable development.

The project, prepared by students Maram Abdullah Hamoud Al-Tairi, Hasnaa Nashwan Ahmed Al-Yarimi, and Aya Ahmed Abdulrahman Ashish, was supervised by Professor Dr. Ahmed Sultan Al-Hajami, with the assistance of Engineer Ahlam Al-Hamdani. The discussion committee consisted of Dr. Mohammed Da’is and Dr. Mohammed Al-Kholani, in the presence of the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Ibrahim Farea.

 The project reflects an advanced level of integration between artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and modern smart technologies. It aims to develop an integrated agricultural system for the early detection of agricultural pests and monitoring of environmental conditions for cucumber crops, thereby contributing to increased production quality, reduced agricultural losses, and improved agricultural management efficiency.

The students relied on integrating advanced technologies, including smart environmental sensors, cameras, computer vision, and image analysis using artificial intelligence techniques. They also employed professional tools and technologies such as Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and the TensorFlow and PyTorch libraries, reflecting the depth of academic and practical training received by students at the Emirates International University.

The system is distinguished by its ability to analyze plant health and detect diseases and pests at early stages. It also monitors temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and environmental gases. Furthermore, it can operate locally without requiring a constant internet connection, making it suitable for agricultural environments with limited infrastructure and enhancing its practical application in agriculture.

 This unique project underscores that the Emirates International University (EIU) goes beyond simply providing academic knowledge. It strives to cultivate graduates capable of innovation, productivity, and competitiveness by integrating education with modern technology and development needs, and by preparing qualified professionals who can design smart solutions with a real impact across various vital sectors.
