Mechatronics Engineering students discuss innovative graduation project: a smart egg incubator based on the Internet of Things

In a new achievement adding to the record of academic excellence of students at the Emirates International University, a group of students from the Mechatronics Engineering Department discussed an innovative graduation project that highlights the advanced level of education received by the college's students and their applied skills. The project, a fully automated egg incubator system based on Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, is the result of collaborative work by students: Amir Mansour Alward, Bahri Hijam Haqous Tasfo, Bassam Waleed Al Maamari, and Osama Mohammed Othman Al Ariqi, under the supervision of Professor Radwan Al Badiji and Assistant Supervisor Engineer Hussam Al Din Al Sabry.

The project responds to the challenges facing traditional egg hatching operations, especially in environments with limited resources. The students presented an integrated smart system that combines modern electronics, precision control, mechanical design, and remote monitoring, reflecting the depth of scientific knowledge and advanced technical skills they have acquired throughout their academic career. The system relies on an ESP32-WROOM microcontroller to read real-time data from temperature and humidity sensors. This data is processed using a PID control algorithm to precisely adjust the incubator environment using silicon cable heaters and PWM-powered humidity regulators. The eggs are rotated regularly to simulate natural incubation using synchronous motors controlled by an RTC timing module.

Advanced mechanical and thermal simulations were conducted using SolidWorks and MATLAB Simscape. Test results demonstrated high efficiency in maintaining the desired temperature and humidity, accurately turning the eggs, and monitoring via a local access point, making the system scalable and practical in agricultural environments.

Dr. Ibrahim Farea, Dean of the College of Engineering; Dr. Radwan Al-Badaji, Head of the Biomedical Equipment Engineering Department; Dr. Mohammed Al-Alafi, Head of the Biomedical Equipment Engineering Department; Dr. Jameel Rashid, Head of the Cybersecurity Department; and Dr. Hani Damaj, Head of the Chemical Engineering Department. They all praised the quality of the project and its outstanding implementation, emphasizing that such projects are the fruit of an educational environment that stimulates innovation and links theoretical knowledge with practical application.

Through these unique models, the Emirates International University continues to consolidate its position as a leading educational institution, keeping pace with technological developments and preparing its students to be creative engineers and future leaders in various disciplines.
