Pioneering Graduation Projects by Chemical Engineering Students Embody Academic Excellence and Yemen's Developmental Aspirations

In a scientific achievement that reflects academic excellence and the advanced level of outputs provided by the Emirates International University, students in the Department of Chemical Engineering presented qualitative graduation projects that embody the link between engineering education and the needs of economic development in Yemen. The project was attended by the University President, Dr. Nasser Hadi Al-Muwafari, the Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Ibrahim Farea, and the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Dr. Hani Damaj, along with a committee of experts and specialists in the oil and industrial sectors.

 

Group One: Methanol Plant from Natural Gas

 

The group, consisting of students Waseem Abdo Al-Hatimi, Ghazi Labib Al-Qurashi, and Suleiman Adel Al-Habashi, presented a project titled "Study and Design of a Methanol Plant from Natural Gas," under the supervision of Professor Dr. Hani Damaj.

The project highlights the feasibility of establishing a methanol production plant in Yemen using available natural gas resources, particularly in Shabwa. It includes the design of processes and equipment from the steam gas reforming stage to the purification of the final product, with a focus on energy efficiency and environmental compliance. The project represents a strategic step toward diversifying the economy and achieving added value from national resources.

 

Group Two: Urea Production Using the Snamprognet Method

 

The second group, consisting of students Ammar Mohammed Hassan Al-Dais, Daifallah Hiba Ahmed Al-Jumaima, Mohammed Tawfiq Mohammed Rajab, and Taha Hussein Ibrahim Abdullah, under the supervision of Dr. Adel Murshid Naji Saeed and Dr. Jamal Abdullah Ahmed Saeed, presented a project titled "Urea Production Using the Snamprognet Method Using Ammonia and Carbon Dioxide."

 

The project focuses on designing an integrated urea production plant with a capacity of 1,000 tons per day, aiming to meet Yemen's agricultural needs locally and reduce dependence on imports. It includes a detailed analysis of the manufacturing stages, energy, engineering design, and environmental impacts, leading to an economic evaluation estimating the project cost at approximately $271 million.

 

 Group Three: Blue Ammonia and Carbon Capture

 

The third group, comprising students Mohammed Ahmed Abdullah Al-Hashidi, Mohammed Hamed Ali Al-Radaei, and Rajeh Mohammed Ali Al-Rubaie, under the supervision of Professor Hani Ahmed Qasim Damaj, presented an innovative project titled "Design of a Blue Ammonia Plant with Carbon Capture and Storage Technologies."

The project aims to enable Yemen to produce ammonia locally using natural gas and integrate advanced carbon capture technologies, enhancing food security and reducing harmful emissions. The project involved using the advanced simulation software Aspen Hysys to design processes and provide practical, implementable solutions in the Balhaf Industrial Zone.

 

 In his speech during the discussion, University President Dr. Nasser Hadi Al-Moufari expressed his pride in the students' contributions, saying: "The advanced scientific projects we witnessed today reflect the excellence achieved by the Emirates International University in its academic output. These student models confirm our ability to keep pace with the needs of industrial development in Yemen and provide realistic solutions that enhance self-reliance and open new horizons for local investment. We believe that linking education with development is the key to the future, and these projects are the best evidence of that."

 

The discussion committee consisted of a select group of academics and experts: Dr. Ibrahim Farea, Head of the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering; Dr. Mohammed Abbas, Oil Expert; Dr. Adel Murshid, Ministry of Oil; Eng. Mustafa Amin Al-Arabi, Quality Manager at Arwa Mineral Water Factory; Eng. Mustafa Al-Mujahid, Main Line Manager at Arwa Factory; and Eng. Jamal Saeed.
