The Smart Robot “Nasr”: A Promising Student Innovation from Emirates International University to Support Nurses in Intensive Care

In an academic scene reflecting the spirit of innovation and engineering excellence, Emirates International University witnessed the discussion of a unique graduation project by students from the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering and Information Technology. The project, titled “Designing a Smart Robot to Assist Nurses in Intensive Care Units Using a Raspberry Pi 5 (N.A.S.R),” embodies the ability of university students to transform scientific knowledge into technological solutions that serve the healthcare sector and keep pace with developments in artificial intelligence and modern medical care.

 

The project, named “Nasr,” is the culmination of outstanding efforts by students Aqeel Mohammed Al Mansour, Ali Abdulhadi Othman Qasim, Mohammed Abdulmajid Al Yousifi, Omar Abdulhakim Al Hakimi, Fayez Fathi Harban, Hussein Thabet Ali, and Zakaria Ahmed Al Wazaf, under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Faisal. It was completed as part of the requirements for a Bachelor's degree for the 2025/2026 academic year.

 

 The project aims to develop an intelligent robot to assist nurses in intensive care units (ICUs). It is designed to act as a smart platform supporting medical staff by displaying patient information, monitoring vital signs, managing medication reminders, displaying doctors' notes, and providing initial AI-powered analysis.

 

The team built the system using advanced technologies, most notably the Raspberry Pi 5 platform and the ROS2 system for communication between the robot's modules. They also developed a smart operating interface called NASR MEDICAL OS, incorporating facial recognition technology to ensure secure interaction, and specialized medical monitoring screens to read and analyze patient vital signs.

 

During the discussion, the students presented the project's prototype and the results achieved. The experiments demonstrated the robot's ability to efficiently process and display medical data, support initial medical analysis with AI assistance, and maintain coherence and communication between the various system components within a controlled academic simulation environment.

 

 The discussion committee, comprised of Professor Dr. Mohammed Al-Alfi, Professor Dr. Radwan Al-Badhiji, Professor Dr. Farouk Al-Fahidi, and Professor Dr. Malek Al-Jabri, and in the presence of the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Ibrahim Farea, affirmed that the project reflects an advanced academic level and promising technical and research capabilities among the university's students, particularly in the fields of biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, and modern health technologies.

 

The “Nasr” project embodies one of the shining examples of the outputs of the Emirates International University, which continues to establish a modern educational environment based on creativity, practical application, and scientific research. This contributes to preparing qualified personnel capable of creating innovative technological solutions that meet the needs of society and keep pace with the demands of the future.

 

This achievement also underscores the university's commitment to supporting high-quality projects that blend technology and human interest, giving students a real opportunity to transform their ideas into innovations with a tangible impact on various vital sectors, most notably the health sector.
