In an academic setting reflecting a sophisticated awareness of the challenges of the digital future, the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the Emirates International University witnessed the discussion of a unique and innovative graduation project by students specializing in information security, entitled:
“Deepfakes and Social Engineering 2.0: Risks, Defensive Gaps, and Hybrid Countermeasures.”
The project was prepared by students: Muhannad Ibrahim Naji Faqih, Habib Sand Musad Al-Najjar, and Ayman Taher Hussein Al-Faiq, under the supervision of Professor Malik Al-Jabri and Assistant Supervisor: Eng. Azza Al-Harthi.
The project addressed one of the most advanced and dangerous cyber threats of the modern era: the use of generative artificial intelligence and deepfakes to execute highly effective social engineering attacks capable of deceiving individuals and institutions through highly realistic audio and visual media.
The study highlighted the radical transformation underway in the field of cybersecurity, driven by the increasing use of artificial media, voice cloning, and modern generative technologies. It emphasized that traditional protection tools are no longer sufficient against this type of sophisticated attack.
The research team also presented a hybrid defense framework that combines intelligent technical analysis with human behavioral verification. They recommended adopting zero-trust and out-of-band verification strategies as key future solutions for protecting digital and institutional assets.
The discussion panel, comprised of Professor Jamil Rashid, Professor Farouk Al-Fahidi, Professor Malik Al-Jabri, and Dr. Hisham Aqlan, commended the project's advanced academic level and the research approach, which demonstrated the students' ability to keep pace with contemporary global issues in cybersecurity and connect academic knowledge with the real-world challenges posed by the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
This project embodies the Emirates International University's commitment to preparing qualified technical professionals equipped with the awareness, knowledge, and ability to address future challenges. This is achieved through an academic environment that keeps pace with the latest scientific and technological advancements, contributing to the development of a generation capable of confidently and effectively safeguarding the digital world.
