In a scene reflecting the integration of academic creativity with a humanitarian mission, the College of Engineering and Information Technology at Emirates International University witnessed the discussion of a unique graduation project by students from the Information Technology Department. They presented an innovative technological solution that touches the lives of a valued segment of society by developing a smart sign language application that translates hand gestures into Arabic letters and numbers with a high accuracy rate of 95%.
The project, which fulfilled the requirements for a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, was brilliantly presented by students Shatha Omran, Salwa Al-Jarrafi, Fatima Al-Marqab, and Ram Abdel-Ilah, under the supervision of Dr. Hisham Aqlan. They successfully employed the latest machine learning technologies to build an intelligent model capable of understanding and analyzing hand gestures and converting them into written language, a step that enhances the inclusion of people with disabilities in society and facilitates their daily communication.
The excellence didn't stop at the application itself; it extended to the production of a scientific research paper that will be published in leading international journals. This reflects the depth of the scientific methodology and the quality of research output that the university is keen to instill in its students' projects. The application was developed using the Flutter programming language, and the smart model was integrated into it, making it ready for practical use and future development.
The discussion was attended by a distinguished group of academic leaders, including Dr. Ahmed Al-Badani, Vice President of the University; Professor Dr. Ibrahim Farea, Dean of the College; and Professor Dr. Farouk Al-Fahidi, Head of the Information Technology Department. The discussion committee—comprised of Professor Dr. Farouk Al-Fahidi and Professor Dr. Mohammed Al-Kholani—praised the project's outstanding level, the quality of its implementation, and the human and practical dimensions of the concept.
This achievement reaffirms that the Emirates International University does not merely provide traditional academic education, but also cultivates graduates capable of innovation, actively contributing to community service, and keeping pace with global technological advancements through a modern educational environment that combines theoretical knowledge, practical application, and rigorous scientific research.
Here, degrees aren't just earned; success stories that inspire the future are forged.
