Mechatronics Engineering Students at Emirates International University Continue Their Scientific Journey in Hodeidah with a Field Visit to the Yamani Factory

In line with an academic vision focused on developing engineers capable of seamlessly transitioning from lecture halls to the industrial realities of the field, and as part of the university's strategy to deepen applied education and strengthen partnerships with national production institutions, third- and fourth-year mechatronics engineering students at Emirates International University continued their scientific program in Hodeidah with a unique field visit to the Yemeni Dairy and Food Products Company – Yamani. This advanced learning experience demonstrated the integration of engineering concepts with modern industrial operating systems within food factories.

The visit began in the sterilization department, where students learned about the integrated stages of dairy sterilization, starting from the initial receipt of raw materials, then filtration and heat treatment, followed by rapid heat sterilization systems (UHT/HTST), and mechanisms for preventing contamination and ensuring microbial safety before the product moves to subsequent stages. This station served as a practical model for the integration of control, temperature, and pressure systems within a precise industrial environment that demands the highest safety standards.

 The students then moved to the central control department, where they learned about automated monitoring and control systems, mechanisms for monitoring temperature, pressure, and flow, and the control of valves, pumps, and production lines via advanced digital screens. They also encountered industrial alarm systems, fault tracking, and operational data documentation, all reflecting the essence of mechatronics and its integration of mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering with control systems.

The tour included the mixing and pasteurization department, where the mixing processes, ratio adjustments, and heat treatment procedures to ensure product safety were explained. The students were shown heat exchangers, balance tanks, and sterilization equipment used in the production lines. They also gained a comprehensive understanding of the "Yemeni Tea Milk" production line, from sterilization and treatment to automated filling, sealing, and packaging, culminating in the final product ready for distribution. They were also introduced to the various other production lines within the factory.

In a fruitful professional meeting, the students met with the engineering team responsible for maintenance. Preventive maintenance programs, scheduled downtime plans, and rapid intervention mechanisms for addressing faults were reviewed, all reinforcing the concepts of operational sustainability and continuous production. The visit also included a significant stop at the Quality Control Unit, where students learned about the mechanisms for subjecting products to local and international standards according to specifications and measurements. They also visited the Chemical Testing Department, where samples of raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods are analyzed to ensure their compliance with quality and food safety standards.

The students were accompanied during the visit by the factory's Production Manager, Engineer Mohammed Darham Al-Maghles, and from the university, by Dr. Radwan Al-Badhiji, Head of the Mechatronics Department, and Engineer Omar Haidar. This academic supervision enhanced the value of the experience and linked it to the targeted learning outcomes.

This visit aligns with the vision of the Emirates International University to prepare engineers capable of understanding automated industrial systems firsthand, translating theoretical knowledge into real-world practical experience. This qualifies them to lead production lines, develop engineering solutions, and contribute effectively and efficiently to supporting national industries.
