In a new academic achievement adding to the record of academic excellence of students at the Emirates International University, students from the Mechatronics Engineering Department discussed an innovative graduation project on Saturday, May 24, 2025. This project is considered a model in the field of smart and sustainable engineering education. The project, titled "A Fully Automated Solar Air Heating System," represents a technological leap that combines clean energy, automation, and artificial intelligence to serve residential and rural communities.
The project was presented by students Anas Abdullah Al-Turki, Hamza Ezz El-Din Al-Ghouri, Ahmed Ali Tabeh, and Ibrahim Mohammed Saif, under the supervision of Professor Radwan Al-Boudhiji, and examined by Professor Mohammed Al-Alafi. The integrated system was presented to the university's examination committee, which received great praise from the committee for the team's technical innovation and precision in implementing the engineering stages and software integration.
The system harnesses solar energy to heat the air via a specially designed solar collector, integrating thermal energy storage technology using phase change materials (PCM) to ensure continuous heating even after sunset. The system is also enhanced with smart automation and Internet of Things technologies, using microcontrollers such as the ESP32 and Raspberry Pi 5, in addition to developing an AI-based smart voice assistant to interact with the user.
Field testing results of the system in Sana'a demonstrated high thermal efficiency, with the solar collector temperature reaching 90°C during the day and maintaining above 40°C for long hours after sunset. The voice assistant also achieved an accuracy exceeding 94% in executing commands, with full control of fans and servo motors.
The project exemplifies the outputs of the Emirates International University, which seeks to make a difference in higher education by focusing on applied innovation and linking academic knowledge with practical solutions that serve communities, especially in off-grid and resource-limited environments.
The student projects reflect the university's vision of empowering its students to develop modern technologies that meet real-world needs and keep pace with global developments. These outcomes are the result of a stimulating educational environment and a distinguished academic staff, unique to the Emirates International University.
