This Sunday morning, the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the Emirates International University witnessed a distinguished scientific event that embodied the spirit of innovation and academic excellence. This event featured the discussion of a graduation project for students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, titled "Design and Implementation of a Smart Stethoscope for Digital Heart Rate Analysis and Remote Health Monitoring."
The project, presented by students Ahmed Ali Mohammed Al-Anzah, Osama Abdulkhaleq Hassan, Ayman Mohammed Al-Jaradi, Mohammed Marwan Al-Ansari, and Mohammed Abdullah Al-Athaimi, and supervised by Dr. Walid Al-Talbi, represents a scientific and technical achievement that reflects the level of excellence achieved by the university's students and embodies the true drive to provide innovative solutions that serve the needs of society.
The smart stethoscope developed by the students represents a qualitative leap in medical diagnostic tools. It relies on a sensitive MEMS microphone to capture heart and lung sounds and process them in real time using a Raspberry Pi 4 module. This enables it to detect early signs of heart and respiratory diseases, such as murmurs, wheezing, and irregular heartbeats, using machine learning techniques.
The project was carefully designed to meet the requirements of low cost and accessibility, utilizing readily available electronic components and open-source software. It also offers the ability to share and analyze data via a smart mobile application, opening up broad prospects for its use in medical services.
The discussion was attended by Dr. Mohammed Al-Alafi, Head of the Medical Equipment Engineering Department; Dr. Ahmed Sultan Al-Hijami, Head of the Artificial Intelligence Department; Dr. Farouq Al-Fuhaidi, Head of the Information Technology Department; and Dr. Walid Al-Talbi, Project Supervisor. They expressed their great pride in the level of performance demonstrated by the students.
