In a scientific achievement that reflects the excellence of the Emirates International University and its students in the fields of innovation and practical application, the College of Engineering at the Emirates International University hosted a discussion this Sunday morning of a distinguished graduation project for students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, titled "Automated Segmentation and Annotation of Magnetic Resonance and Computed Tomography Images in Cancer Detection." The project was supervised by Dr. Mohammed Al-Alafi.
The project addressed improving the accuracy and efficiency of cancer diagnosis, particularly lung and colon cancer, using artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques. This was achieved by developing an integrated framework based on the U-Net model for high-precision tumor segmentation. The project also included designing an interactive user interface using PyQt6 to facilitate physicians' work and improve the diagnostic experience.
The results demonstrated the exceptional effectiveness of the proposed framework, with lung tumor segmentation accuracy reaching 99.95%, sensitivity reaching 99.97%, and specificity reaching 99.92%. In the case of colon tumors, the accuracy reached 98.57%, the sensitivity 98.62%, and the specificity 98.88%.
The importance of the project lies in providing a practical solution to reduce diagnostic errors resulting from radiologists' overwork, using a smart tool that aids in early tumor detection, contributing to saving lives and improving treatment pathways.
The graduation project was submitted by the student team: Muhammad Sadiq Ali Murshid Al-Jamai, Ali Khalid Muhammad Zaid, Munther Jalal Muhammad Al-Zuhairi, and Alaa Amin Sarhan Al-Rawdhi, and supervised by Dr. Muhammad Al-Alafi.
The discussion was attended by Dr. Fouad Ismail Hanash, Secretary General of the University; Dr. Muhammad Al-Alafi, Head of the Department of Medical Equipment Engineering; Dr. Farouk Al-Fahidi, Head of the Department of Information Technology; Dr. Ahmed Sultan Al-Hijami, Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence; Dr. Hani Damaj, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering; and a number of college staff.
At the conclusion of the discussion, the University's Secretary-General, Dr. Fouad Ismail Hanash, expressed the University's pride in its students, who demonstrate outstanding creativity and innovation in their graduation projects, reflecting the university's unique educational excellence. He emphasized that supporting student innovation and scientific research remains a strategic priority for the University's leadership, and that the University continues to graduate qualified national talent capable of making a positive impact on society, both locally and internationally.
