Vision

To become an outstanding national department of Biomedical engineering, recognized by its

innovative, high quality educational and research programs with an emphasis on training and partnerships with national health and medical centres.

Mission

To provide a high-standard biomedical engineering curriculum along with a strong practical experience, effective communication, teamwork, entrepreneurial and critical thinking skills that enable graduates to contribute to the development of the society and develop a successful professional career and/or pursue further studies in biomedical engineering and related disciplines. In addition, the department aims to carry out research with an effective partnership with the local and national medical institutions to fulfil the needs of the society and regional market-place.

Objectives

  1. To provide the necessary knowledge, standard education and training in the field of Biomedical Engineering that prepares the graduates for a professional career in various types of managerial and technical professions.
  2. To provide students with the capabilities to apply knowledge and think clearly, creatively, logically and originally when they design, analyze, program, build, and maintain biomedical devices.
  3. To provide graduates with diversity of skills that help them to be competent and well-equipped for professional and successful career in local and regional market-place.
  4. To provide graduates with the opportunities to develop a sense of responsibility, lifelong learning skills, teamwork and communication skills as well as a good understanding of professional ethics, global, economic, environmental, and societal issues related to the discipline.
  5. To encourage a stimulating academic environment for high quality research and development.
  6. To be engaged in activities that enhance the capacity of the staff and graduates to deal with technological and professional development.
  7. To contribute effectively to the development of the society and respond to the continuous development challenges.

Department head’s speech

Firstly, we welcome our dear students and visitors to the university’s website. I would like to present an overview of the department, as the medical equipment engineering specialty is considered one of the latest engineering sciences that arose with the development of modern medicine, based on a group of highly advanced medical devices responsible for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients. Therefore, it was necessary for other specialists from fields other than medicine to intervene, combining engineering and medical sciences, to be responsible for designing these devices with great efficiency. After the doctor was the only one who carried out all the tasks of diagnosis, treatment, and even the manufacture of medicine, the medical device became an essential support for the doctor in diagnosing, treating, and monitoring patients. Given that there was an urgent need to develop medical devices and equipment to serve the health of patients and speed their recovery, it was necessary for specialists from other fields to intervene. Other than medicine, like engineers, to design these devices, they also had to be familiar with the medical sciences, including the anatomy and physiology of the human body and other things, to understand the mechanism of operation of each system and to harness their knowledge and expertise to develop these devices. Thus, the need arose for the necessity of having an engineer who is partially familiar with all of these specializations on the one hand and who can deal with doctors, on the other hand, keeping in mind that it is not a substitute for any of them. The  major  of medical equipment and devices engineering is considered the link between medical sciences, physiological sciences, and engineering sciences, in addition to other sciences related to computer and control engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. The medical equipment engineering major allows creativity, development and invention to achieve life benefits from this field. Medical equipment engineering also applies the knowledge and expertise available in engineering and medical sciences to provide benefit to humanity through the design of medical, diagnostic, therapeutic and prosthetic devices.
