In a humanitarian gesture brimming with knowledge and generosity, the College of Oral and Dental Medicine at the United Arab Emirates International University organized a field visit for its second-year students to the Pediatric Leukemia Treatment Center at Kuwait University Hospital. This visit is part of its scientific and community activities aimed at integrating academics with practical application and humanitarian service.
The visit was sponsored by the Dean of the College, Prof. Ibrahim Al-Shami, in coordination with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (Laboratory Medicine). A select group of second-year students participated, under the direct supervision of Prof. Ibrahim Al-Shami, Dean of the College; Prof. Abdul Basit Al-Ghouri, Head of the Department of Laboratory Medicine; and Dr. Azal Atef, Academic Coordinator of the College. They were accompanied by faculty members Dr. Nayib Rajih and Dr. Hiyam Al-Haidari.
The team was received by Prof. Abdulrahman Al-Hadi, Director of the Center, and Dr. Naseem Al-Absi, Consultant Pediatrician and Hematologist, who welcomed the students and expressed their appreciation for this scientific and humanitarian initiative, which aims to raise health awareness among children with blood cancers and provide them with psychological and moral support.
The team toured the center's various departments, and the students learned about the nature of their medical conditions and the treatment services provided to children. They also interacted with medical staff, sick children, and their families in a touching human experience that combined knowledge and emotions, instilling in the students the values of compassion and social responsibility.
The visit included a distinctive awareness-raising and practical component, as the students distributed toothbrushes and toothpaste to the children and explained to them in a simplified manner the importance of taking care of oral health during chemotherapy, given its impact on preventing infections and improving the quality of daily life.
At the conclusion of the visit, the Center Director and medical staff expressed their deep gratitude to the College of Dentistry for this noble gesture, appreciating the university's efforts in promoting health awareness and spreading medical culture among its students and community.
Professor Ibrahim Al Shami, Dean of the College, and Professor Abdul Basit Al Ghouri, Head of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, emphasized that such visits represent a noble scientific and humanitarian message, contributing to honing students' skills and connecting them to professional reality. They noted that oral health is an integral part of the public health system, and that attention to it represents a fundamental pillar in caring for children with chronic diseases.
